Love is in the air! No, really. It’s that time of year again where love is all around and people are looking for ways to celebrate it. What better way to do that than by watching some of the best romantic comedies? There are some underrated gems out there that deserve more attention. Here are 10 movies that should be on your radar!
Something Borrowed
This hidden gem is one of my favorite romantic comedies from the 2000’s. It’s got all the elements of the category without being overly cheesy and has excellent repeat value – it’s charming, funny, and will make you root for the underdog. Plus, it features an amazing ensemble cast that includes Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson. If you’re looking for a feel-good movie to watch with your significant other, this is definitely it!
About Time
This quirky British romantic drama will have you smiling and crying and gives all the warm and fuzzies. With its charming story and lovable characters, it’s easy to see why this film is so popular. If you’re looking for a movie to watch that will make you happy and laugh, then look no further than About Time. Perfect for any night in!
Sleeping With Other People
Smart and funny, these two have great comedic chemistry and it’s easy to love their flaws. The film follows two former college lovers who reconnect twelve years later and decide to have an affair. While the premise may not be original, Sleeping With Other People is still a fun, enjoyable movie. If you’re looking for a movie your male counterpart will equally enjoy this is the one!
Elizabethtown
If there’s one thing that Elizabethtown has going for it, it’s charm. The story of a man (Orlando Bloom) who visits his small hometown after his father’s death and while home, he meets and falls for Claire (Kirsten Dunst). It’s a typical romantic dramedy with plenty of humor and heart. If you’re looking for a feel-good movie, Elizabethtown is it. Cameron Crowe managed to strike the perfect balance between lighthearted moments and more serious scenes, making it an enjoyable and uplifting film to watch.
How To Be Single
Whether you’re newly single or have been on your own for a while, “How to Be Single” is the perfect movie for you. This hilarious and heartfelt film explores the roller coaster ride of being single in today’s world. Featuring an all-star cast, “How to Be Single” is sure to make you laugh and feel inspired. Unexpectedly enjoyable… this is one you probably skipped over but should definitely watch next time it pops up.
Catch and Release
Catch and Release is a heartwarming film about love, relationships, and the unexpected turns life can take. The story follows Gray (Jennifer Garner), who must come to terms with the sudden death of her fiancé. This movie will make you laugh, cry, and everything in between. If you are looking for an easy movie to watch, Catch and Release is definitely worth checking out.
Young Adult
So this one may not be under-rated (hello, Oscar nominations) but it’s an often forgotten dark comedy with hints of romance. I wouldn’t call it a feel-good movie, but it will make you laugh (and cringe). What’s the verdict? Is “Young Adult” worth your time? In short: absolutely. The film is razor sharp, funny, and brutally honest in its portrayal of modern life. It doesn’t shy away from the darker aspects of growing up – a fact that makes it all the more relatable. If you’re looking for an introspective and thought-provoking film, “Young Adult” is well worth a watch.
A Lot Like Love
This may be a guilty pleasure of mine but I’ve always had a soft spot for this movie. Cheesy and predictable but peppered with sweetness. This film follows the journey of two people who can’t seem to stay away from each other, even though they are complete strangers. It’s heartwarming, funny, and will make you want to hug someone by the end. If you’re in the mood for a romantic comedy that will make your heart happy, this is definitely the movie for you!
Made of Honor
When Hannah announces her engagement to another man, Tom (Patrick Dempsey) is heartbroken. But he soon realizes that he has a chance to be there for his friend during her wedding and maybe finally win her over. “Made of Honor” is a lighthearted film that will make you laugh and smile. Dempsey and Monaghan are great together, and the supporting cast is funny too. It’s the best kind of cheesy.
Serendipity
If you’re looking for a Christmas movie you can watch all year, this is it. It gives you all the magic of the holidays without being Christmas-themed. This movie proves John Cusack plays a hopeless romantic better than anyone. The film follows the two twenty-somethings as they meet one night in New York City and instantly fall in love. However, they both know that it’s not meant to be and they go their separate ways. A few coincidences bring them back together, but can they overcome their differences and find happiness? This touching story is an enjoyable watch for any movie lover.
